CLARITY & COHERENCE

Brene Brown observes that "clear is kind" but it is also very hard. So much so that many organizations never achieve it to a significant degree. Part of the reason why is because leadership clarity demands institutional coherence - which is shared meaning and shared understanding. One Band. One Sound. One Score. In effect, 'coherence' is the difference between 'organizational' noise and music. Coherence is organized by leadership (as 'conductor' and ‘musicians’) but it is defined by the experience of end-users (the ‘listeners). To make ‘music,’ musicians must do more than just ‘play,’ they must ‘play together.’ Hence, the importance of the conductor and composition. Similarly, leaders must do more their plan and align work in isolation. Coherence is defined by the ability of the people implementing plans to understand and be able to explain what they are being asked to do in the context of what others are being asked to do. Making Leadership ‘music’ means integrating the complex, discrete elements of the work so that it is easily accessible, intuitively understood and practically feasible for the folks doing the work. #LeadWithClarityAndCoherence
