LEADERSHIP DIAGNOSIS.

In medicine and leadership, prescription before diagnosis can be a dangerous proposition. In fact, an effective prescription is dependent upon the accuracy of diagnosis for two important reasons. First, prescriptions are only optimal based upon diagnostic context. And second, the efficiency of a quick prescription with an inadequate diagnosis is undermined by its lack of overall effectiveness. Albert Einstein affirmed the importance of diagnosis, observing that the solutions we ‘find’ are shaped by the way we frame problems. In a leadership context, enacting solutions prior to interrogation of presumptions will often lead to an adverse impact and or unanticipated perverse incentives. Effective leaders ask questions and pursue root cause analyses to balance the anticipated benefits of proposed changes with the risks of potentially unnecessary or inaccurate change solutions. #LeadWithDiagnosis
