LEADERSHIP ORIENTEERING.

Every leader is an orienteer. In recreation, orienteers find their way over an unfamiliar course (i.e. as in the woods) using a map and compass. In organizations, leaders chart unfamiliar 'systems terrain' using four rules. First, "know where you are going" - the rule of destination. Second, "know where you are" - the rule of location. Third, "get everyone faced in the right direction" - the rule of clarification. And lastly, "get moving" - the rule of navigation. Effective leaders and institutions consistently recalibrate using 4 correlated orienteering questions: (1) Where are we going? - this is a question of 'vision.' (2) Where are we? This is a question of ‘current position.’ (3) Does everyone understand where we are going? This is a question of ‘collaboration.’ And (4) How can we best progress towards our vision? This is a question of ‘execution.’
