ROLE CLARITY.

Having processes aligned to goals without role clarity is like having a kite without a string - you’re ready to soar, but things will get out of control pretty quick. This is because roles determine process ownership, and confusion on this point leads to friction, at the minimum, and if unresolved, factions, in the extreme. Both phenomena have a detrimental impact on an organization and its ability to achieve results at scale. The key to establishing effective process ownership is fostering a climate of mutual accountability and collective mastery. Decisions must be made and there will not always be consensus, but when stakeholders are involved and when they believe compentent decisionmakers are acting in good faith with a learning mindset collective efficacy is enacted. Leinwand and Mainardi observe that Mutual Accountability is founded on trust and it is fostered in an environment where everyone is dedicated to everyone else’s success. Combined with Collective Mastery - where expert functional leaders continually practice colaborating across functional boundaries to raise the overall all quality of what they do together (def. from Strategy that Works) - Mutual Accountability is a key lever to reinforce role clarity, not as a weapon, but as a mutually beneficial tool to increase system effectiveness. #LeadWithRoleClarity
