Transition is part of life and leadership, but ‘transition’ can be hazardous if not navigated appropriately. A friend recently reminded me, “transition is ok as long as you are running towards something, not away from something.” In fact, ‘the principle of entering and leaving’ holds that the way a leader ‘leaves’ one place, season, or stage in their life determines the way they will enter their ‘next.’ (Edwin Louis Cole) The Latin phrase, ‘caveat ductor’ (let the leader beware), reminds us that transitions (among other leadership actions) are best conducted with intentionality and with an understanding that timing is everything. Leaders should never fear transition, but they should navigate it with knowledge and awareness. #LeadThroughTransition
